SCROLL DOWN FOR A DIRECTORY OF COURTHOUSE LACTATION SPACES FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FAWL’s Lactation Space Bill, SB 144, Signed into Law We are so proud of all the work FAWL members have done to establish lactation spaces in courthouses across the state. The passage of SB 144 builds on that effort by requiring courthouses to provide at least one lactation space for use by members of the public. “While I am honored to be serving as President of FAWL when the Governor signed this legislation, I want to note that the passage of this important legislation would never have happened without the tireless efforts of many FAWL members in our chapters across the state who have spent their own time, money and effort to establish lactation spaces in their local courthouses,” said FAWL President Donna Eng. “To Joann Grages Burnett and Jennifer Feld – thank you for your leadership of the FAWL Lactation Space Taskforce over the last few years. And finally, to Senator Lori Berman and Representative Ashley Gantt, thank you both so much for your sponsorship of this legislation this year. Your support and leadership was crucial. On behalf of all the members of FAWL, I thank you for your efforts,” she concluded. “The hard work of FAWL’s nearly 3,000 members throughout the state has paid off,” said FAWL Legislative Director Mary Ann Ruiz. “Every time we see a lactation space in any courthouse throughout the state, we will be reminded that we did this, for the mothers and children of Florida.” FAWL Executive Director Kari Hicks noted, “This is a huge win for working professionals and other women who frequent these public buildings who need access to a hygienic space to provide for their families. We thank our legislative sponsors for their leadership on this important issue and the Governor for signing this bill into law.” State Senator Lori Berman commented, “It was a true honor and pleasure to work closely with Rep. Ashley Gantt and FAWL to ensure the passage and signing of SB 144 into law. Nursing women requiring a safe, hygienic and private space to breastfeed or pump will now be able to do so. This is a great day for Florida women entering and working in our courthouses and courtrooms, whether as judges, attorneys, jurors, personnel, visitors or in any other capacity.” State Representative Ashley Gantt added, “I cannot wait to travel around the state to celebrate the opening of lactation spaces because our lactation space bill was just signed by the Governor. It has been an honor to advocate for women and families all across the State of Florida. Thank you Senator Berman, FAWL, and our staff for making this a reality.” The Florida Association for Women Lawyers is a statewide non-profit whose mission is to actively promote gender equality and the leadership roles of FAWL’s members in the legal profession, judiciary and community at large. FAWL offers grants to their chapters who seek to establish lactation spaces in courthouse across the state. ###
